CHRISTMAS FUSS FAIR 2012
The CHRISTMAS FUSS FAIR has mushroomed since it began back in 2006, & this will be the 7th xmas fair held. Today two sections of Staplehurst Road are closed and last year 40 proper stalls were hired and erected there. Although local artisans are given first choice as the FAIR gains in popularity stallholders come from all over London. Many people asking months in advance when booking for stalls will begin. There are homemade cakes, exquisite jewellery, stationary, soft furnishings, clothing, footwear, handmade toys, pottery etc. Plus, some of the local shops hire stalls, as do other community groups and charities.
There is live music and local choirs and an MC. This year the lights on the Christmas tree will be turned on at 4pm followed by the drawing of the Traders Raffle, the prizes having been contributed by all the shops and businesses in Staplehurst Road and some beyond. Last year we had hundreds of visitors to the Fair, neighbours who were only on nodding acquaintance struck up conversations, old friends resumed relationships, grandparents brought their grandchildren, sons and daughters brought their aged parents, locals invited friends from afar and sang carols together and a jolly good time was had by all. We trust that this year will be at least as good.
FUSS at Hither Green don’t set out to make money from the Christmas Fair, its purpose is provide an exciting event for the local community and help build that sense of
Throughout the year they organise other activities. Last year, these fundraisers included two very successful Craft Fairs held in a local Community Hall, plus dances, fun Nights Information days and stalls at other Community events. They publicize FUSS at local Assembly meetings, apply for grants and seek sponsorship.
“People appreciate what FUSS do and how it enhances our community.”
All this is done by a group of local people, unpaid and unsung; the kind of people who for generations have given their time and energy. There are also many in the wider community who will willingly give of their time when called on, doing the heavy work on planting days, bringing their children along to wield their mini trowels, stand in the cold to help keep the road clear before the stalls arrive, clear up, provide hi-vis jackets, raffle prizes and general backup.
The community spirit is still very much alive and well in Hither Green. Come down on the 8th December and see for yourself!
